First Baptist Church, at Waller and Octavia Streets, was built in 1910 with John D Rockefeller’s donation. We led an architect-engineer-contractor team in the building’s seismic reinforcement, striving to complete a project that would look as if we had never been there. Central flight of a triple entry stair was removed for an elevator—recessed six feet from the façade to preserve the deeply shadowed entry porch—which serves elevated sanctuary and basement social hall.
